Know Exactly What You Are Getting
Not every life insurance policy builds cash value. Before you apply and choose a coverage type, here is a plain-English breakdown of each policy and whether it builds cash value — so there are no surprises about what your policy does.
Does NOT build cash value
Term Life and Term with Return of Premium are pure protection. They cover you for a set number of years and do not accumulate cash value.
Builds cash value
Whole Life, Indexed Universal Life (IUL), and Final Expense are permanent policies that build cash value over time.
Term Life Insurance
Temporary protection✕ No cash valueThe most affordable coverage. Protects you for a set period — 10, 20, or 30 years.
Pure protection for a fixed number of years. If you pass away during the term, your family receives the death benefit. Term does NOT build cash value, and if you outlive the term the coverage simply ends — you do not get anything back.
Term Life with Return of Premium (ROP)
Term — money back at the end✕ No cash valueStill term insurance, but if you outlive the term you get all of your premiums back.
Return of Premium is still TERM insurance — it covers you for a set period and does NOT build cash value along the way. The difference is that if you are still living when the term ends, the insurance company refunds the premiums you paid. Because of that refund, ROP costs more each month than standard term. You are trading a higher premium for the guarantee that the money comes back at the end if you do not use the policy.
Whole Life Insurance
Permanent + cash value✓ Builds cash valueLifelong coverage with a fixed premium that builds guaranteed cash value over time.
Permanent coverage that never expires as long as premiums are paid. It builds guaranteed cash value you can borrow against, and the premium never increases. Final expense and most child policies are forms of whole life.
Indexed Universal Life (IUL)
Permanent + market-linked cash value✓ Builds cash valuePermanent coverage whose cash value grows tied to a market index, with a 0% floor.
This is the policy explained in Tamika’s video. An IUL builds cash value linked to a stock-market index (like the S&P 500) with a floor so you never lose money when the market drops, plus a death benefit. The cash value can be accessed tax-free in retirement. The growth shown in the video applies to IUL only — not to term policies.
Final Expense / Burial Insurance
Permanent + cash value✓ Builds cash valueA small whole life policy designed to cover funeral and end-of-life costs.
A type of whole life insurance with a smaller benefit (typically $5,000–$25,000) made to cover funeral, burial, and final bills. It builds modest cash value and the premium never increases.
